Eighteen young budding artists and illustrators from Kin Kin, Cloyna, Moffatdale, Gympie Central and Gympie East State Schools attended the annual artist in residence camp program here at Barambah EEC. Local artists Josephine Frost (JoJo), Sandra Gilchrist and Sue Gibson delivered a range of engaging nature and animal inspired visual art and creative writing lessons. Over the four days the young creators experimented with a range of artistic styles and writing techniques to develop a portfolio display at the Barambah exhibition to share with their friends and family.
The week was a great success with students going home with many new skills, a deeper appreciation of the outdoors and a knowledge of positive wellbeing strategies. A big thank you also to Rebecca Payne, Principal of Moffatdale S.S. who came along and supported these students on their artistic journeys.
Listen to some of the participant’s thoughts about the program:
“The experience at Barambah is to die for, from my very first steps through the door. It’s always exciting, (especially when writing) we are always learning even when the fire is burning.” - Frances
“Camp encouraged me to be a writer, now my life is even brighter.”
- Zara
"Writers Illustrators camp was a wonderful experience for all of the students (and staff) who were involved. It was refreshing to spend time with the students with no access to technologies which encouraged the students from a variety of schools to get to know one another and actually talk and play games that required team work. A huge shout out must go to the staff at Barambah who organised the camp – it is definitely an opportunity I am glad that our school had the chance to attend.” – Mrs Payne
If you know a Year 5/6 student who would be interested in participating in next year’s Writers and Illustrators camp please feel free to contact Sandra at sgilc8@eq.edu.au.
